Empowering Multigenerational Collaboration – A Founder’s Perspective
Women are increasingly taking charge in business, starting their own companies, and leaving a significant mark. But what happens when these ventures bridge not just one but two generations? A fascinating trend is emerging – women-owned businesses are teaming up with their daughters, blending family dynamics with business endeavors.
Women have been making waves in various sectors for quite some time, whether it’s launching tech startups or establishing retail outlets. They’re breaking stereotypes and injecting fresh ideas into the mix. But their goals extend beyond personal success; they’re also focused on creating enduring legacies for their families.
Picture this: mothers and daughters joining forces to run a business. It’s a special bond that merges different backgrounds and perspectives, combining personal connections with professional aspirations. This collaboration adds an extra dimension to the concept of family businesses, enriching it with shared experiences and goals.
Ten years ago, I started my consulting journey, driven by things I cared about and a desire to help others. At the same time, my daughters were growing up, and their experiences influenced how I ran my business.
About four years ago, my consulting venture reached a pivotal moment. It was time to formalize our operations and chart a clear path forward. My youngest daughter played a significant role in this transition – she helped shape our story and contributed as much effort as I did. Together, we’ve unknowingly built something that can seamlessly welcome her into the business in an integral way.
Our business has been certified as women-owned for almost a year, and we’re ready to grow. We know that bringing in someone from a different generation can bring fresh ideas and energy to our plans. We’re excited to see where this next chapter takes us!
Supporting daughters in developing their skills and pursuing their dreams is crucial for women entrepreneurs. It’s not just a matter of pride; it’s about ensuring a bright future. Mothers play a vital role by mentoring, guiding, and providing opportunities for their daughters within the family business. However, it’s not a one-way street. Daughters also have a lot to teach their mothers. They bring fresh perspectives, new ideas, and knowledge from their experiences. This collaboration strengthens both parties, fostering resilience and a shared sense of purpose. Together, they build a solid foundation for success, learning from each other every step of the way.
The trends in family and women-owned businesses are further discussed in a Forbes article titled, “Family businesses are a cornerstone of the global economy, representing an estimated 70% to 90% of the global GDP and 50% to 80% of jobs in the majority of countries worldwide.” The Numbers do not lie; additionally, “Women-led family businesses have increased by 58% since 2007.”
The expansion of women-owned businesses to include adult daughters represents a powerful testament to the enduring legacy of female entrepreneurship. By bridging generational divides, nurturing talent and ambition, overcoming challenges, and embracing opportunities, these collaborations redefine the traditional notion of family businesses and pave the way for a future where women continue to thrive as leaders, innovators, and trailblazers.
